Why did we decide to build up, and not down?

I think its a situation of the human spirit. For some reason being higher elevates our moods. Being on top of a mountain is an exhilarating, free sort of feeling while being underground tends to lead to an idea of claustrophobia...being restriced. The sun is a powerful thing. It can change your whole outlook on life.
